Teaching at CWRU

I oversee the Public Humanities & Civic Engagement Graduate Certificate and teach Early-Modern Art History at Case Western Reserve University.

The Certificate in Public Humanities and Civic Engagement, which was launched in Fall 2022, addresses the growing demand for greater access to both experiential learning opportunities and civically engaged work in communities across greater-Cleveland.

As has been well documented, the liberal arts have been threatened by the commodification of education and the rise of STEM-based learning. Public Humanities and Civic Engagement strategies have been shown to energize the Humanities more broadly, while also expanding graduate

student paths toward future employment and increasing interdisciplinary relationships across campus.

This certificate recognizes the work that faculty are already doing to bring their students into Cleveland communities, and offers students a unique new credential to demonstrate their preparedness for a job market that expects applicants to be public-facing and civically engaged.
